Leatherman Skeletool - A Stripped Down, Lightweight Multi Tool Fitted With The Most Used Tools Offered By Leatherman

I have bought a few multi tools in the past, but never really had a use for them. I carried one for fixing saddles and horse gear when on the move for a short period of time but wasn't too pleased with them.

In the main they are a collection of unsubstantial miniature tools with far too many ornaments and toys fitted to be of use for jobs except the most simple of tasks.

When the higher quality tools started to appear they were substantial and chunky again, still with too much junk attached. For a moment it became evident that the multi tool brands tried to make the largest clunkiest, heaviest pocket tool available. It was like the cell phone challenge with all companies trying to pack as much stuff they could into a multi tool. It seemed pretty weird for a while.

For kayaking trips I always packed a small tool kit with what I knew I would use rather than a bulky tool. It weighed in at a very slightly more than a pound but inevitably it would be used at least one time on a longer trip. The kit was normally made up of a tiny short screwdriver, a pair of pliers, some spare screws, plus some wire. I recently found a multi tool that makes absolute sense to carry with me though.

Ironically, they have been for sale for some time but I overlooked them. A while back, I had to install a shower head but was not equipped with tools. In the end I did it with purely a can opener and a set of scissors. I decided this would be a good time to start making use of my multi tool again. I sorted through the junk drawer and found it after a while, I then reminded myself why it got stuck there there initially. Because it was junk.

Bring to the fore the Skeletool from Leatherman:

At around 5 ounces it could live in my pocket unnoticed most of the time and it mean that I no longer needed a couple of items from my tool kit. The super point is that for the campsite where you may have to fix a gas cooker, a metal buckle on a pack, the zipper on a shelter, or tighten up a faulty canoe seat; the Skeletool is all you need without any of the unnecessary tools.

To start with the pliers are pretty standard for multi tools. They have incorporated wire cutters and they cut through coat hangers pretty well so will tackle the brass wire I carry.

Next the knife, simple to deploy with one hand using a thumb hole. The edge was sharp enough to cut the corner off a piece of paper with no problems.

The screwdriver attachment comes with a couple of phillips and a couple of slotted bits. The bits are exclusive to Leatherman as opposed to industry standard, nevertheless they do lock into the unit with a spring clip. The extra one neatly stores in the handle and is a friction fit.

Finally, its well constructed and put together by my standards - I am pretty fussy with stuff like this. I purchased my Leatherman Skeletool at Leatherman Store and they also sell the Leatherman Skeletool CX.
